Hear a program of “Chamber Music” for this New Sounds, just not the Western classical kind. There will be no string quartets, wind octets or brass quintets here. Rather, hear the West African kora, the Indian slide guitar, and the Chinese lute – all instruments that sound perfectly great as chamber music.
Listen to Malian kora player Ballaké Sissoko and French cellist Vincent Ségal recorded on a Bamako rooftop, from the stunning record Musique de Nuit. Listen to chamber music by the trio of sax and clarinet player Yacine Boularès, cellist Vincent Segal and drummer Nasheet Waits- who draw on traditional music of the streets of Tunis, France, and Manhattan. Hear a duo of Chinese erhu and American banjo in a collaboration between banjo player Bela Fleck and the Chinese musician Jie-Bing Chen.
There’s also music from Flamenco guitarist, Pedro Soler and a cellist - his son, Gasper Claus, along with chamber music by John Zorn, from his Masada chamber series. Also, sample music by Kala Jula, a chamber ensemble made up of Malian griot Samba Diabaté and Swiss multi-instrumentalist Vincent Zanetti –accompanied by two French musicians: violinist Jacky Molard and bassist Hélène Labarrière. Plus, hear music from Indian slide guitarist Vishwa Bhatt and guitarist Ry Cooder, and more lyrical, elegant chamber works.
